It was announced today that Grant Hill will sign with the Phoenix Suns on July 11th when the NBA starts to allow free agent signings. Which makes me question is this a good signing for the Suns? Grant Hill is still a solid NBA player as he proved with Orlando last year and it appears like he can play for the next two years of his contract. Why the Suns though, there are two teams in the NBA that Hill doesn't fit the style the Warriors and the Suns. Both of these teams love to run and want to score as quickly as possible and would rather outscore you than try and play a little bit of defense. There's nothing wrong with that style and this blog isn't challenging that idea, but Grant Hill is a horrible fit in this system. He has had countless surgeries on his legs throughout his career, he almost had to retire because of them. Now on the tail end of his career, he's in search for the one thing that has eluded him in his career, a Championship. Hill supposedly wanted to go to two teams either the Suns or the Spurs, and he picked the wrong one.
Running every night throughout the year will take a toll on his legs, he may need to go Barry Bonds style and sit out every other game. Hill had to sit out a handful of games last year to rest his legs so he could make it through the regular season on a team that didn't run in the Magic. How fresh will Hill be come playoff time, a full season of running on those legs may wear him down, and if he sits out to much he will be out of shape. I don't expect Hill to start for the majority of the regular season and think he will be played maybe 10-15 minutes a night which should be fine. However come playoff time when his minutes go up his stamina will go down and the risk of injury and his body falling apart will rise. I like Grant Hill and think he is a stand up guy, I want this move to work for him, but I feel like the Suns and Hill maybe a bad marriage before the honeymoon is even over.
